Feral Cat Services

PHS/SPCA offers a significantly discounted package for residents who care for abandoned street cats in our county. For our purposes, “street cats” refers to undersocialized, fractious, and feral cats living without human families - abandoned domestic animals who have reverted to a quasi-wild state and their offspring. Most often, all are lumped together and referred to as “feral cats.”

PHS/SPCA believes that cats require and deserve the same level of human stewardship as do dogs, and that treating cats as if they are wild animals capable of thriving on their  own without human care does a great disservice to both those cats and to native wildlife. Given this position, we encourage TTVAR (trap, test, vaccinate, alter, return) where caretakers are willing and able to provide ongoing care for cats and believe that this approach best serves all animals, including local wildlife. As you many know, PHS/SPCA is among just a handful of humane societies in the entire country which includes wildlife rehabilitation among its core services.

We offer trap rentals ($50 deposit and $1/day rental fee) through our Coyote Point Shelter. Please visit during normal open hours or call 650-340-7022 x339 for information on renting a trap.

People who have successfully trapped an abandoned street cat and wish to have the cat altered can bring the cat to PHS/SPCA’s Spay/Neuter Clinic to be tested and altered. We alter street cats by appointment only, Monday through Friday. Once you have trapped a street cat, please call this number and leave a message: 650/340-7022 x679. Staff will check messages and call caregivers back to make appointments. Please note that trying to call around to different shelter departments in an attempt to reach a live person will not expedite the process; if anything, it will mean your information will not be left in the only place where it needs to be.

Our Clinic’s package includes vaccines as age appropriate, ear tipping and FIV/FeLV tests, in addition to the surgery. This service is available for just $50 or it is free when a county voucher is presented. To obtain a voucher, call San Mateo County Health Department, Monday through Thursday, at 650/573-3940.

PHS/SPCA is fortunate to be able to continue offering what we believe is a generous and comprehensive package for caregivers like you, so you can continue doing this good, vital work. We truly appreciate the role you play in our community, caring for cats who have been neglected, abandoned and even possibly abused by others. Your work is important and rarely appreciated by others outside of our circles.

New Agreement for Undersocialized, Fractious & Feral Cat Caregivers

PHS/SPCA will be asking caretakers of feral cats to agree to provide certain basic care to cats they bring to us for spay/neuter. Please click here for more information.
